| 1) Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and background. I'm an Australian primary school teacher so I don't get a whole lot of "hobby" time. But the time that I do have is generally spent being geeky. I'm big on Star Wars (obviously), Red Dwarf and Doctor Who. I'm obsessive about tea but I always drink coffee when I'm away from home because nobody seems to know how to make a good cup of tea anymore. I can talk for 45 minutes about my favorite dinnerware before realizing that nobody is interested and can confidently predict that I will cry sporadically for a period of no less than 3 weeks when I break my first plate. I can't relax in a room where the DVDs aren't in alphabetical order. DVDs should ALWAYS be in alphabetical order. Unless they belong to a series, such as Doctor Who or Star Wars. In which case they should be in chronological order. 2) How long have you been costuming? What kinds of experiences have you had? Since I was six I've had this geeky, purple haired friend called Susie (who, curiously enough, is also a teacher now) that moved to Australia from the United States. One of the eccentricities that she picked up over there was the tradition of Halloween. If you're from the United States, Halloween doesn't seem that eccentric. But over here it is - nobody celebrates it. Except Susie. Her family would throw these big parties where everyone would dress up, play games and go trick or treating. Unfortunately, the neighbors didn't always get into the spirit of things and my first costuming experience ended in tears. I'd spend hours setting goop all over my face and meticulously painting it so that I'd look like a rotting corpse. The party started alright, and then about 15 of us decided to go trick or treating. Every neighbor we tried said that they didn't have anything ready, after all, Halloween isn't celebrated in Australia. Just as we were about to abandon all hope, an old man answered the door and told us to wait where we were. Naturally, we assumed he was going to get some lollies. He re-emerged with a bible and a cross and started waving them around madly, screaming at us that we were all going to Hell. All the little kids burst into tears, Susie's big sister told him where he could stick his cross and we went home, lolliless. 3) What's your earliest memory of seeing Return of the Jedi? Gosh... it was still a new release video. I must have been about 3 or 4? Even at that age, I could recognise that there was something sexual about that scene with Jabba and Leia. Something about his tongue. I remember having dreams about that dancer that he pulls in on the chain... for a long time I associated sex with death because of that. I need help. 4) When did you get your first "metal bikini" and what drove you to it? I got my first metal bikini from Jamin. :-) My internet boyfriend, Luke (seriously), sent me the link to the Metal Bikini site... and I had to have one! They looked fantastic! 5) What is your favorite memory of appearing as Slave Leia? My favorite memory isn't of my appearance as Slave Leia... more the rehearsal. I had the bikini out, making final adjustments, when there was a knock on the door. It was my boss. She came in, took one look at the costume, and said, "What's THAT?" So I told her. I actually had to explain it to her because she wasn't familiar with the whole "metal bikini" thing (Can you BELIEVE) that there are people that haven't seen Return of the Jedi?!?!). The whole time she was looking at me like, "I knew you were a geek, but OMG." Then she asked where I got it, so I showed her Jamin's site. "Is that Leia?" "Yes." "Who's that, then?" "That's Leia, too." "Is that her mother?" "No, that's Leia again." "Ew! What's that?!?!" "That's Jabba the Hutt." She paused for a moment, examining Jabba with disgust. "You know what? I don't even wanna know." 6) If you danced for Jabba the Hutt, what song would you dance to and why? "Your Woman" by White Town. Because the instrumental sounds EXACTLY like the Imperial March, just quirkier. Next time you're watching Star Wars and Darth Vader marches onto the screen, try it. You can sing "Your Woman" straight over the top of it. Well I guess what they say is true, I could never be the right kind of girl for you I could never be your woman.... 7) Any final words? By the way, how cool would it be to use the Imperial March for a wedding? I want to see the look on my mother's face when I walk down the isle to that music. She'll throw something at me for sure. Don't worry, I'll duck. The Force is with me - always. Thanks Michelle! |
