1)  Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and background.

I grew up in the midwest in a small town and remember going to see Star Wars as a small child with my brother and parents.  My brother fell asleep, but I stayed wide awake and wondered if we had seen the last of Darth Vader.  Although my brother got all the Star Wars toys as we were growing up since he was a boy, I loved playing with them, too.  We would also act out scenes from the movies with our friends in our backyard.

I now live in the southwest with my husband, 3 cats, 2 birds, and 1 dog where I am a veterinarian.  I enjoy spending time with them, reading
Star Wars books, working out, swimming, and making costumes.  I also have a rather large Star Wars collection that only began in 1995.

2)  How long have you been costuming?  What kinds of experiences have you had?

I just started costuming last January because I wanted to bring some costumes to Celebration 2.  I remember going to Celebration 1 and seeing fans in Star Wars costumes and thought that was so amazing - especially since some had made them themselves.  Since I couldn't afford to buy my own costume, I decided to do some research online, taught myself to sew and made my own.  My intent was to bring 2 costumes to C2, and I wound up bringing 4!

3)  When did you get your first "metal bikini" and what drove you to it?

I made my first one, my
Slave Katanna costume, for C2.  I thought that since I had blonde hair I couldn't be Princess Leia (silly me), and I decided to make a custom costume instead.  I always thought the "metal bikini" was the coolest and sexist costume ever, so it was first on my list to make.

4)  What is it about Slave Leia that inspires you to portray her?

She is just so strong and so sexy and not intimidated by anyone, not even Jabba the Hutt.  She keeps her cool and winds up killing Jabba with her slave chain and her bare hands - how cool is that?

5)  What is your favorite memory of appearing as Slave Leia?

Well, I haven't worn my Slave Leia yet in public, but plan on doing so at
DragonCon this year.  However, I had such a blast wearing my Slave Katanna costume at C2.  I love getting stopped for pictures.  I remember we were sitting with friends in the front row to see Billy Dee Williams.  Before the talk began, I kept having guys come up and ask to have a picture taken with me (and my husband kept having to take the pictures!).  He was such a great sport about it.  Well, the fun I had is what inspired me to make the original Slave Leia Metal Bikini!

6)  If you danced for Jabba the Hutt, what song would you dance to and why?

Hmm, I think something fun like "Shake Your Groove Thing."  I love Disco and that is such a fun and funky song that it could make me forget about where I was dancing.  Heck, I think even Jabba would get down and shake it a little to that song!!!

7)  Any final words?

I just hope that I can be an inspiration to others who want to make this costume.  It can be done, without a lot of money and without any costuming experience.  It just takes time, lots of patience, a little creativity, and a lot of guts to wear it!

Thanks Mirax!
