1)  Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and background.

Currently, I live in Dallas, after living in New Orleans for eight years as a child, then most recently small-town Alabama.  Which probably explains a lot about me - my interests range from reading and writing, to 1890's New York City history and ballroom dancing, to cooking and yoga.

2)  How long have you been costuming?  What kinds of experiences have you had?

I've been costuming all my life - Marti Gras was my favorite holiday as a kid.  (Very disturbing to discover that it wasn't a commonly celebrated holiday like Halloween or Christmas.)  It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I started sewing on my own.  Up until then, both of my extremely talented grandmothers sewed things for me.  Costuming-wise, Star Wars and Moulin Rouge are my main fandoms, although I do dabble in other areas.

3)  When did you get your first "metal bikini" and what drove you to it
?

I bought my bikini in May of 2007, for the opening weekend of the Star Wars:  Where Science Meets Imagination Exhibit in Ft. Worth, Texas.  It was the biggest Star Wars event for Kessel Base/Star Garrison that summer, and I wanted an equally impressive costume.  Unfortunately, due to the ongoing feud FedEx and I have concerning the delivery of packages, it arrived at my apartment at almost the exact same time I arrived at the museum that Friday evening.

4)  What is it about Slave Leia that inspires you to portray her?

Aside from the goal of having all of Leia's outfits?  She's a strong leading female in a male-dominated galaxy (and genre).  While she might initially be the damsel-in-distress, Leia does quite a bit of rescuing herself.  And no matter what situation she's in, she still manages to be feminine.

5)  What is your favorite memory of appearing as Slave Leia?

So far, the most amusing moment took place at
Dragon*Con.  There wasn't a crossing guard between the Marriott and the Hilton hotels on Saturday afternoon, so everyone had to chance it with the traffic.  Unless, of course, you were an upright citizen and crossed at the crosswalks.  As soon as traffic slowed down enough to safely cross, I started walking.  A moment or two later, the rest of the crowd followed.  Half-way across the street, I hear someone behind me say, "Thank you, Princess Leia!  You're our only hope.  The rest of us would have been run over."

6)  If you danced for Jabba the Hutt, what song would you dance to and why?

In general, I don't like knowing that people are watching me dance.  It makes me too self-conscious.  Ironic, isn't it, considering the costume?  "Karma Slave", by Splashdown, maybe.  Or "Venus", by Bananarama.

7)  Any final words?

If you've been thinking about wearing the costume but haven't for whatever reason, go ahead and do it.  It's a lot of fun.

Thanks Rachel!
